Teaching and learning in Year 7 and 8 at Blue Mountain College occurs in mixed ability 'form rooms' where one teacher delivers core learning areas such as English
and Mathematics. In form classes, students experience strong teacher-student relationships. Generally, students will remain with this same form class for both Year 7 and 8, however, their key teacher will change. At Blue Mountain College we have experienced and passionate teachers who are committed to the education and well being of our students.

Alongside our school values, we focus on four Critical Capabilities which underpin and are infused throughout our teaching and learning programmes. These critical skills are - Whanaungatanga (Connected), Tū Pakari (Confidence), Ākonga Taumano (Life-Long Learning) and Manaakitanga (Actively Involved).

Our Junior students experience a range of other specialist subjects such as Agriculture, Digital Technology, Food and Nutrition, Health and Physical Education Science, Social Science, The Arts, Te Reo Māori, Construction and Mechanical Technologies (Workshop). We have specialist facilities for each of these subjects as well as an extensive Library, Learning Support and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teaching spaces.

At Year 9 and 10 the options for students increases markedly. They are able to choose from a large range of subjects for their "options" as well as studying English, Maths, Science, Social Sciences and Physical Education and Health.
